How to read an order, pick out deadlines, and turn directions into a practical task list.
Start with the order
- Read the whole order once, then go back and mark every date, action and named person.
- Look for words such as must, shall, file, serve, disclose, exchange and attend.
- Separate court deadlines from personal preparation tasks so nothing is hidden in a paragraph.
Build the action list
- Create one line per direction: what must happen, who must do it, when it is due and where it must be sent.
- Add reminders several days before the real deadline.
- Keep proof of sending, including email receipts or postal tracking where relevant.
When something is unclear
- Do not ignore a direction because it feels confusing.
- Check whether the order gives permission to contact the court office for administrative clarification.
- If the issue affects your rights or the case direction, consider legal advice before the deadline passes.
